We need to walk the talk!!

As a Red Cross Training Agency we spend a lot of time teaching people how to use and the importance of the Automatic External Defibrillator. We stress how important it is to have them available in work places, public facilities etc. It has been bugging me that we teach all this but the ones we actually have in the school are trainers that do not shock … which would be useless in a real emergency. What if one of our students had a heart attack! Well we fixed that! Today we took delivery of a beautiful Lifepak 500 Defibrillator (left) as well as an identical trainer version (right) so we can teach people how to use it. The 500 will be available in all our courses and our instructors will be trained how to use it in an emergency.

CPR A, B, C, HCP … What’s the difference??

This table provides a brief comparison of the different CPR levels. You may see courses identified as CPR Level C or CPR level A. This should help to de-mystify those different levels.

CPR-A is CPR with Adult skills only plus Automated External Defibrillator. There are no child or infant skills covered in this level. This is the level of CPR included with Workplace Emergency First Aid / Occupation First Aid Level 1. These courses are designed for assisting workers in the workplace to meet Worksafe BC requirements.

CPR-B covers only infant and child skills plus Automated External Defibrillator. No adult skills are covered. This is the level of CPR that is included with Red Cross Childcare Emergency First Aid.

CPR-C is full CPR with adult, child and infant skills plus Automated External Defibrillator. This level of CPR is included with Red Cross Emergency and Standard First Aid. It’s also offered as a stand alone course.

CPR-HCP is reserved strictly for hospital emergency staff (RN or MD), generally those working on a crash team or working in a critical care area. It is also provided to Paramedics, Firefighters and other emergency services personnel. The HCP course is not applicable to the general public or non-critical care staff. HCP includes all the skills of CPR-C with the addition of special airway opening techniques for spinal patients, Pulse Checks, Rescue Breathing, Two-Person adult/child/infant CPR and use of the Bag Valve Mask Resuscitator.

I don’t need first aid training, emergency services are close by!

As a first aid instructor I hear that statement all the time. “Why bother with first aid training when emergency services is only a 911 call away”. It’s true, in the BC Lower Mainland we are blessed with an enhanced 911 system that gives emergency services tremendous information even if we are unable to speak. We have an ambulance service and paramedic program that is second to none in the world and fire department personnel that are highly skilled and often located right in our neighbourhood. We also have hospital emergency departments and trauma units that are staffed with some of the most highly skilled medical personnel in the country. So really, why do we need to worry about first aid training with all this going for us?
